Maputo is the capital and the most populous city of Mozambique, an African country, and one of the largest urban centres of the country. It is located in the Southern region of Mozambique. The city has approximately 347.69 km² (134.24 square miles) and has an estimated population of 1,121,697 people. Its economy is centered on commerce and service and its gross domestic product (GDP) corresponds to 14,396 billion dollars, with a nominal US$ 475 GDP per capita.
Eduardo Mondlane University, through its Research Unit Center of Diversity, Gender and Health at the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, is devoted to research and advocacy on modern slavery issues. Research activities of this Unity include community extension activities and the establishment of forums and spaces enabling debate, counselling and referrals. In addition, awareness campaigns including group activities, sensitization/counselling services, posters, graffiti and wall murals in schools and public streets have been taking place in several cities including Maputo City.
To understand factors influencing and reproducing modern slavery in Maputo city. To share experience of how modern slavery manifests in the city, and learn from other cities experience and approaches used to fight against modern slavery.
